One thing I learned about through Dr. Flick’s presentation was about the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Triple Aim. The main three points of this aim are improving the patient experience, improving the health of populations, and reducing the per capita cost of healthcare. This aim addresses a range of community determinants of health, empowers individuals and families, and broadens the role and impact of primary care and other community based sercices. The main influences of the IHI Triple Aim is to push OTs to be more involved in community-based practice, primary care, and population, to increase education and training in health promotion, prevention, and health literacy in all health care programs, to put an emphasis on inter professional education, and to have more research on health outcomes and cost effectiveness in OT.
Another important topic that I took away from the lecture was about the three types of interventions that aim to reduce threats to health. These preventions include primary, secondary, and tertiary. Primary prevention is focused on preventing disease or injury before it ever occurs. Secondary prevention is focused on reducing the impact of a disease or injury by detecting it early and preventing it from getting worse. Lastly, tertiary prevention is focused on limiting the impact of an ongoing illness or injury that has lasting effects to improve someone’s quality of life.
